South Downs Psychotherapy
In my work as a therapist, I aim to draw on my professional skills and experience, as appropriate to your particular needs. My supportive and non-judgemental approach provides you with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the problems or difficulties you are facing. Finding a new perspective may help you to open up the possibility of moving forward, or making any changes that feel right for you. It might also lead to the discovery of new meanings in life, developing a sense of self-acceptance, or finding new strategies to deal with your particular circumstances.
At our first meeting, I would talk with you about your current situation and problems and how counselling or psychotherapy might help you. I would also talk to you about the kind of work we might do together, before making any agreement with you to take the work beyond the first meeting. If I thought I was not able to help, I would discuss the alternatives with you.
Counselling is usually fairly short term and focused on perhaps one specific issue or difficulty that the client is facing. The work might, for example, include gaining a new perspective on the problem and finding new ways of dealing with it.
Psychotherapy tends to be more long term and places greater emphasis on the client's underlying psychological and emotional patterns. The work might, for example, involve looking at how these patterns are played out between the client and therapist, with a view to helping the client change or adapt their ways of relating to others.
